CAN EATING CARROTS IMPROVE EYESIGHT?
It seems like as kids, everyone was told that eating carrots would give them better eyesight and even see in the dark. Which was just a ploy to make kids eat their vegetables. The myth that carrots can give you night vision began after a rumor spread during the time of World War ll. Pilots didn't want to reveal that there was a radar helping them see. So they decided to create a rumor. They said eating carrots enabled them to see at night when it got dark. Many people believed this and began to repeat this rumor. Unfortunately, eating carrots will not give you super powers or allow you to see in the dark.
However, eating carrots does help to maintain overall eye health, and in turn, positively effects eyesight. The reason that carrots are beneficial to eyesight is because of the vitamins they contain. Carrots contain beta-carotene, which is a substance that the body can convert into vitamin A. This is important to eye health, along with vitamins C and E. Vitamin A can be found in many foods, which means that other foods can also contribute positively to eyesight. Vitamin A is important to eyesight and for many, can have more of an impact. For people who normally do not eat vegetables or other foods containing vitamin A, it is definitely a good idea to consider eating some carrots. If you have a well balanced diet, and consume foods with Vitamin A daily, the increased intake of carrots may not have the same effect. Although there is no change of developing night vision or superpowers, the overall effect that foods containing vitamin A brings, is positive for maintaining eyesight as well as positively effecting other parts of the body. |
